Biography

Karel Smit finished his medical degree at the UMC Utrecht in 2016. He has worked as a medical doctor in psychiatry and internal medicine, before starting his internal medicine residency training in 2018 (Meander MC Amersfoort/UMC Utrecht). He paused this training in 2020 to work fulltime on his PhD research at the UMC Utrecht, Dept. of Medical Oncology, and the Julius Center, Dept. of Epidemiology.

The primary aim of his research is to generate evidence for individualized dietary and physical activity recommendations for patients with colorectal cancer. This project is part of the “Regio Deal Foodvalley”, program "Nutrition and Health, from early start to the old day", workpackage "Nutrition and Oncology".
